Would I be a good listener at the Listening Post Barrie? There is room for all sizes and kinds of listeners! Are you wondering if you might have the qualities needed to be a volunteer with the Listening Post Barrie? There is only one thing required to become a listener: a desire to listen. To become a volunteer at the Listening Post we only ask one more thing of you: take our introductory training session. This training is done in two sessions of about 2.5 hours each. This time together will give volunteers insight into what it means to be present as a listener and some of the things that, over time, we’ve learned about listening as an ongoing practice, a sacred art, and an invaluable offering to our community. What is helpful to know before I volunteer?
*If you take the training you don’t have to commit if you are not comfortable with the listening role. No judgement.
*There are no set expectations for how much you volunteer. We are grateful for whatever time you can give us. And we know you will be better able to listen in the community even when you can’t make it to the Listening Post. But we have found that taking two shifts a month leads to greater continuity and honing of skills if you can arrange that.
*We expect you will enjoy listening and appreciate what each visitor brings to the listening space. We also expect you to take care of yourself and know when you need to take a break or ask for help
* We ask that you agree with our confidentiality and ethics guidelines
*We ask that you be at least 18 years of age or older
* We ask you to be willing to attend a monthly Volunteer Support meeting for support and practice
*Every new volunteer will be partnered with an experienced mentor until the volunteer and mentor are both comfortable with you in your role as listener
* We require a vulnerable sector police check that is no older than 6 months
*To protect those we listen with and our volunteers we require you to provide proof of full vaccination status and complete a Covid protocol form.
*We ask you to provide 2 reference contacts
